Case Study:
Analyzing Bad Bunny’s
DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS
Through Cultural Journalism
As part of my graduate studies in Public Relations at Full Sail University, I was tasked with writing a 300-500 word news article using the inverted pyramid structure—a foundational journalistic technique that prioritizes the most crucial information first. This assignment required me to conduct research, interview a source, and craft a compelling, well-attributed story that adhered to professional reporting standards.
The Assignment
The goal of this project was to develop a news story that demonstrated my ability to:
✔ Identify and research a relevant, timely topic
✔ Conduct an interview and incorporate direct quotes
✔ Attribute sources accurately using journalistic style
✔ Write in a clear, structured, and engaging manner
I chose to focus on Bad Bunny’s latest album at the time, DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS, exploring its cultural and historical significance within Puerto Rican and Afro-Caribbean communities. This article examines the way Bad Bunny blends nostalgia, socio-political commentary, and traditional Latin music influences to create a project that resonates across generations.
Research & Interview Process
To add depth to the story, I conducted an interview with my mother, Lastenia Edwards, who provided firsthand insights into how the album’s themes of migration, cultural pride, and resilience mirror the experiences of many Caribbean and Latin American immigrants. Her reflections helped ground the article in lived experiences, making the piece both informative and deeply personal.
Takeaways
This project challenged me to think critically about storytelling in journalism and PR, balancing factual reporting with narrative depth. Writing about an artist like Bad Bunny, who seamlessly integrates culture, history, and activism into his music, reinforced the importance of using media as a tool for education and cultural preservation.
